Exploring the Charms of Marvelous Creatures and the Symbolic Lighthouse of Genoa
GENOA LIGHTHOUSE: A symbol of the city of Genoa, perched on the promontory of Capo di Faro, the Lanterna, standing at a towering height of 77 meters, is the tallest lighthouse in the Mediterranean and the second tallest in Europe. The current structure dates back to 1543, but since the 12th century, a tower with a similar structure existed, initially serving as a watchtower to announce the arrival of suspicious vessels and evolving over time into a lighthouse. At the summit of the Lanterna, bundles of wood were burned to signal to sailors the entrance to the port. In 1326, the first olive oil lantern was installed, its light concentrated into a beam through transparent crystals crafted by master glassmakers from Liguria and Venice. In the 15th century, the Lanterna tower was used as a prison, housing, among others, the King of Cyprus. In the early 16th century, the Briglia fortress was built, commissioned by Louis XII for the troops stationed in the city. The Genoese, rebelling against the French, bombarded it, damaging the Lanterna, reducing it to a “half tower.” In 1543, it was reconstructed, and the ancient battlements were replaced. Since then, the Lanterna has withstood naval bombardments at the end of the 17th century, the conflicts of 1746 after the Portoria uprising, the bombings of World War II, as well as numerous moments of natural fury (until 1778 when it was equipped with a lightning rod). In more recent times, the lighthouse’s power significantly increased, both with the introduction of modern optical systems (the rotating system with Fresnel lenses since 1840) and the adoption of new fuels: acetylene gas (1898), pressurized oil (1905), culminating in electrification in 1936.
The new season is just around the corner, and the wonders of the seabed await. The entire staff is ready to welcome you, ensuring a unique and rejuvenating experience for you and your children. At the Genoa Aquarium and the Lanterna, wonder is always assured and guaranteed!
But there’s so much more to discover at the Genoa Aquarium!
