BASILICA DI SAN MARCO: the construction of the basilica, which at first should have been part of the Doge’s Palace, began in 828, to house the body of San Marco, who arrived here from Alexandria. Although the current construction dates back to the 11th century, the building has undergone various changes over the centuries. The current basilica, with a Latin cross plan and five domes, became the city’s cathedral in 1807. It has more than 4,000 square meters of mosaics, some from the 13th century, and 500 columns from the 3rd century. Inside the Basilica, the dominant color is gold. The mosaics in the dome of the Ascension (the main dome) are from the early 13th century and show scenes from the New Testament. The atrium mosaics were made with glass and gold tesserae and depict scenes from the Old Testament. Under the altar, supported by four columns of alabaster and marble, rests the body of San Marco. Access to the Basilica of San Marco includes the Museum, the Treasury and the Pala d’Oro. The museum of the Basilica of San Marco is important. Visiting the museum, you will be able to closely observe the roofs and mosaics of the cathedral, contemplating the works of the museum, and you will see the original sculptures of the Horses of San Marco. These four bronze horses, dipped in gold, were found in the hippodrome of Constantinople and were acquired by Venice as booty of the fourth crusade. Copies of these horses occupy the Loggia dei Cavalli (the balcony overlooking Piazza San Marco).
PALAZZO DUCALE: a masterpiece of Gothic art, the Doge’s Palace in Venice is structured in a grandiose stratification of constructive and ornamental elements: from the ancient foundations to the overall three-fifteenth-century structure, to the conspicuous Renaissance inserts, to the sumptuous mannerist signs. It consists of three large buildings that have incorporated and unified previous buildings: the wing facing the San Marco Basin (which contains the Sala del Maggior Consiglio) and which is the oldest, rebuilt starting in 1340; the wing facing the Piazza (formerly the Palazzo di Giustizia) with the Sala dello Scrutinio, whose construction in its present form begins in 1424; on the opposite side, the Renaissance wing, with the Doge’s residence and many government offices, rebuilt between 1483 and 1565. The public entrance to Palazzo Ducale is the Porta del Frumento (so called because it was located next to it the “Ufficio delle Biade”), which opens under the portico of the fourteenth-century facade overlooking the San Marco Basin. The origins: the first doges. The first permanent settlements ne The Venetian lagoon probably dates back to a time after the fall of the Western Roman Empire (476). Over time, these settlements become more and more durable, so much so that they are considered real outpost positions of the Byzantine Empire. At the beginning of the ninth century, what is now taking the shape of the city of Venice acquires greater autonomy, favored by the remoteness of the capital and also emphasized from a religious point of view. Devotion to Theodore, the eastern patron saint, was replaced by the cult of the apostle Mark, whose mortal remains, according to a later historiography, would have been preserved in the lagoon city. In the year 810, Doge Angelo Partecipazio moved the seat of government from the island of Malamocco to the Rivoalto area (the current Rialto). The decision to build the palatium duci here, the Doge’s Palace, dates back to this phase. It can be hypothesized that the model could have been the Diocletian’s palace in Split, although nothing has survived of the 9th century structures
