The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento is the largest archaeological site in the world. This Sicilian plateau spans 1,300 hectares of sun-kissed history, where some of the most notable ruins of the ancient Greek and Byzantine empire still stand
YOUR EXPERIENCE: Embark on a journey into antiquity and see incredible archeological remnants of Sicily’s Hellenistic history. Be amazed by some of the most famous Doric temples: the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Concord and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
Learn about the incredible history of the site from your guide and admire enchanting views of the Mediterranean Sea It’s not actually in a valley, believe it or not. It’s on a ridge. But don’t let that minor detail put you off; the temples at Agrigento are a sight to behold, and the ridge itself is quite the looker! Avoid the long queues – especially in the summer months – with a guided tour and fast-track access to this wonder of antiquity. This visit suitable for everyone, adults and children, and allows you to visit the entire archaeological site. At the end of the visit, you can stay and explore and photograph all the corners of the valley. A UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest archaeological site in the world, the sun-worn ruins in the Valley of the Temples revive the lost imagery of long-collapsed Greek and Byzantine empires. With the Mediterranean Sea splashing against the shores, explore the remains of what was once a thriving society as you move from temple to temple, past fallen statues, an 800-year-old olive tree, and down the beautiful ‘Via Sacra’. The remains are in varying conditions and the centuries have certainly taken their toll in places, but whether you’re drawn to the stunningly preserved Concordia Temple or the weather-beaten Temple of Olympian Zeus, you’re sure to be affected by these monumental structures.

THE VALLEY OF THE TEMPLES OF AGRIGENTO: on a rocky ridge that delimits to the south the plateau on which the classical town once stood, the remains of Doric temples still emerge, of uncertain attribution: from east to west, from 127 to 70 altitude, Hera (Juno) Lacinia, Concordia, Heracles (Hercules), Olympian Zeus (Jupiter), Castor and Pollux (Dioscuri) and Hephaistos (Vulcan). Lower down, the plain of San Gregorio crossed by the river Akragas, at the mouth of which was the port and emporion of the ancient city. Near the river, the temple dedicated to the god of medicine, Asclepius. Ancient Akragas, in the 5th century BC, was a thriving cultural center: home of the pre-Socratic philosopher Empedocles, frequented by Pindar and Simonides. In Roman times, the city was visited by Cicero in search of evidence of the rapacity and embezzlement of the pro-consul Verre and described by Virgil in the Aeneid. From the Middle Ages to the present day, the vestiges, the multiple landscapes, the vegetation, the colors and the echoes of the lost civilizations have attracted and inspired philosophers, writers, poets and painters: Ludovico Ariosto, Goethe, Maupassant, Alexandre Dumas, Anatole France, Murilo Mendes, Lawrence Durrell, Francesco Lojacono, Nicolas de Stael, Salvatore Quasimodo, Luigi Pirandello.
