POMPEII THERMOPOLIUM ESCAVATION SITE: a path to follow to visit the archaeological area of Pompeii starts from Porta Marina so called because it faces the sea. This gate, which almost looks like a tower included in the walls of the ancient city, had two passages: one for pedestrians, the other for animals and light means of transport. In one of its niches there is the terracotta statue of Minerva, protector of the door. Near the gate stood the Suburban Villa of Porta Marina, a residence from the imperial era, with frescoes in the third Pompeian style (20 BC – 45 AD), of an Egyptian style. Just outside the door are the suburban Baths, opened to the public in 2002, characterized by a peculiar dressing room, in which erotic pictures are frescoed that probably served as a placeholder for the prostitution activities provided to customers. In Via Marina stands the Temple of Venus built by Silla in 80 BC. given his particular devotion to the goddess. On the left, always on the same trajectory, stands the Temple of Apollo, consisting of a portico with forty-eight columns. This temple dates back to the Samnite era, it has paintings in the fourth Pompeian style, which is at times ornamental and at times rigid, essential. Inside the sacred enclosure there were statues of various divinities including the bronze one of Apollo darting and a bust of Diana. In the vicinity of the temple there is a pre-Roman basilica which, due to its functions, can be compared to today’s Palace of Justice.

The archaeological sites of Pompeii and surroundings Adjacent to the Basilica stands the Civil Forum which was the heart of the economic, religious and social life of ancient Pompeii. In the imperial era, the Eumachia Building, the Temple of Vespasian and the Sanctuary of the public protectors of the city were built. The Eumachia Building was built by Eumachia herself, priestess of Venus, who dedicated it to Concordia and the Pietà Augusta. The building consists of two rooms: in one you can see a large container that was used to contain urine, the other, on the other hand, was used as a wool deposit. The Temple of Vespasian, whose construction dates back to the period in which Vesuvius erupted, has remained incomplete. However, you can admire a marble altar placed in the center of the courtyard on which the scenes of a Sacrifice, the Instruments of the Ceremonial of Worship, two laurel trees for Emperor Vespasian and a crown of oak leaves are depicted. The Sanctuary of the Public Lares, decorated with polychrome marble, could be considered a real place of worship in the imperial age. In the western area of the Forum there are the Granaries of the Forum or Horrea which, at the time of the eruption in 79 AD. C., were an open-air construction site. The Macellum also dates back to the Samnite era and is made up of three rooms: in the central one there is an aedicule with two marble statues perhaps depicting Octavia and Marcellus, the one on the right was intended for the drainage of the water because the fish market, and finally, the room on the left was used for religious rituals. In the northern area of the Forum stand the Temple of Jupiter, dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, and the Temple of Fortuna Augusta, built by a certain Marco Tullio, a rich politician. In the cell of the time there was the statue of Fortuna Augusta. Then, the Baths of the Forum rise, built in 80 BC. C., consisting of a male section and a female section and three rooms: the Calidarium (hot bath), the Tepidarium (warm bath) and the Frigidarium (cold bath).
