The Tower is located in Piazza del Duomo, next to the 11th century Duomo and the Baptistery. With this ticket, you can avoid the long lines at the entrance and admire both the Tower and the Duomo at your leisure. The Tower is the third oldest structure in Piazza del Duomo, after the Duomo and the Baptistery. Construction of the Tower began in 1172 and was completed in 3 phases over the course of 199 years. In 1987, the Tower was declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Piazza del Duomo together with the Duomo, the Baptistery and the cemetery, located in the immediate vicinity.
TOWER OF PISA: on 9 August 1173 the foundation works of the bell tower of the Cathedral of S. Maria began. It is a bell tower independent of the church, about 56 meters high and weighing 14,453 tons. Most likely it was under the direction of the architect Diotisalvi, the same who had started the construction of the nearby Baptistery, which began its construction. This first phase of the works was interrupted at the height of the third ring due to the subsidence of the ground on which the base of the tower stands. The softness of the ground, but also the fact that in ancient times a bend of the Auser river flowed in the area of the tower, which therefore made the ground unstable, is in fact the cause of the tower’s slope, and of its fame. These stability problems prevented the continuation of the works for a long time. The construction site then resumed in 1275 under the guidance of Giovanni di Simone and Giovanni Pisano, adding another three floors to the three rings of the original building. In an attempt to straighten the tower, the three additional floors tend to curve in the opposite direction to the slope. The tower was completed in the middle of the following century, adding the belfry. The structure of the monument is quite particular because it consists of two concentric cylinders connected to each other by an internal spiral staircase that leads up to the upper cell. On the external cylinder there are six loggia floors marked by columns on which round arches rest. The basin at the base of the tower, on the other hand, is an addition from the 19th century. The inclination of the building currently measures 5 ° with respect to the vertical axis. The tower remains in equilibrium because the vertical that passes through its center of gravity falls inside the support base.

Founded in 1064 thanks to the spoils that the Pisans brought back from the sacking of Palermo and from the anti-Saracen enterprises of Reggio, Sardinia and Bona, the Cathedral of Santa Maria testifies to the prestige achieved by the Maritime Republic of Pisa at its peak. This is demonstrated by the fact that the church was erected outside the walls, to symbolize a power that did not fear threats. The Cathedral was built in two phases, respectively linked to the architects Buscheto, author of the original layout with a basilica body with five naves, a transept with three naves and a dome on the cross; and Rainaldo who designed the extension of the building and created the façade which features black and white contrasting colors, and an insistent use of reused materials from Roman monuments, in repetition re the greatness of Pisa. The seam between the Buscheto nave and the Rainaldo extensions, due to the same subsidence of the ground that gives the bell tower the inclination for which it is known throughout the world, shows instability and differences in level. Numerous orientalisms that can be traced in the decorative elements and in the elliptical plan of the Moorish-inspired dome enrich the complex that has changed due to the repeated restoration campaigns that have taken place over the course of the different eras: from the first radical interventions to repair the damage caused by the terrible fire from 1595, up to those that in the nineteenth century involved the replacement of copies of the original sculptures now kept in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo. Of the important commissions that went to integrate the furnishings of the Cathedral in the first half of the fourteenth century, there remain the mosaic decoration of the apse basins which owes the figure of St. John the Evangelist (1302 ca.) to Cimabue; the new pulpit (1302-1310) by Giovanni Pisano; and a dismembered sepulchral monument of Emperor Arrigo VII (1315), once in the center of the apse.
